Transportation and ground access

The airport lies about 24 km by road from Midtown Manhattan, with access organized around the road network and the AirTrain system, which provides the main connection between the terminals and external public transport links. Ground transportation options include taxis, AirTrain connections to the subway and commuter rail, buses and rental cars.

Official taxi stands are located in designated areas at the terminals and in their adjoining ground transportation zones.

Pick-up is organized through regulated official points within the airport complex, with additional information available from the Welcome Centers in the arrivals areas.

The AirTrain system connects the passenger terminals with Jamaica and Howard Beach stations, as well as parking facilities, Federal Circle and other parts of the airport complex.

At Jamaica, passengers can connect with the subway and Long Island Rail Road (LIRR), while Howard Beach provides access to the subway network. AirTrain therefore serves both as an internal airport transport system and as a link to New York City’s rail network.

Public bus services connect the airport and different AirTrain stations with several parts of Queens and the wider New York public transport network.

Some routes serve the airport area directly, while other connections are made through external stations linked to the terminals by AirTrain.

The main car rental companies are concentrated at Federal Circle within the airport complex.

The rental car center is connected with the terminals through the Federal Circle AirTrain station, allowing passengers to travel between the rental facilities and the terminal buildings.

🚆 Getting between terminals

Travel between terminals is provided by AirTrain JFK, an automated train operating in the public area of the airport and connecting the passenger terminals, parking facilities and other parts of the airport complex.

AirTrain travel between the terminals and internal points such as Federal Circle is free of charge. Passengers changing terminals for a connecting flight will normally need to pass through security again at their departure terminal.

📦 Distinctive feature

An airport complex organized around separate terminal buildings connected by AirTrain, which serves as the main internal transport system and provides links with external ground transportation.
