Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat Airport (IATA code: BCN, ICAO code: LEBL), officially known in Catalan as Aeroport Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat, is an international airport located in El Prat de Llobregat, in the province of Barcelona, approximately 15 km from Barcelona city centre, in Spain. It is Spain’s second-busiest airport by passenger traffic and has two passenger terminals, T1 and T2, handling domestic, European and intercontinental flights.

Transport and getting around
The airport is connected to Barcelona by train, metro, bus and taxi, with car rental services also available. Road access is mainly via the C-31, with separate approaches to T1 and T2. The most convenient transport option depends on the arrival or departure terminal and the passenger’s destination in the city.
The journey to central Barcelona usually takes around 20–35 minutes, depending on traffic and the destination. Fares are metered, with an airport surcharge and a minimum fare of €21 for journeys starting at the airport.
Taxis are particularly convenient for reaching hotels directly, especially when travelling with heavy luggage, children or several passengers. They also provide direct transfers to nearby destinations such as L’Hospitalet, Castelldefels and Sitges.
R2 Nord train: departs from the station next to T2B, accessible via a pedestrian walkway. It provides direct connections to Barcelona-Sants and Passeig de Gràcia, with trains running approximately every 30 minutes. Passengers arriving at T1 must first take the free terminal shuttle to T2.
Metro L9 Sud: has stations at both terminals and connects with L1 at Torrassa, L5 at Collblanc and L3 at Zona Universitària. It is useful for reaching different parts of Barcelona, L’Hospitalet and the Fira exhibition centre, although reaching Plaça Catalunya requires a transfer.
Airport metro stations require a special airport ticket or a valid travel pass; the T-casual ticket is not accepted. The R2 Nord train is generally more convenient for reaching Sants or Passeig de Gràcia, while the metro offers connections to other parts of the city.
Aerobús A1 and A2: connect the airport with Plaça Catalunya, stopping at Plaça Espanya and other central locations. Route A1 serves T1, while A2 serves T2, including stops at T2B and T2C depending on the direction of travel. Both operate 24 hours a day and are among the most convenient ways to reach central Barcelona with luggage.
TMB Route 46: connects both terminals with Plaça Espanya via El Prat de Llobregat and L’Hospitalet. It is a cheaper urban bus alternative to Aerobús, although it makes more stops.
Night buses: Route N17 connects T1 with Barcelona, while N18 provides services towards Plaça Catalunya and also picks up passengers at T2 in the direction of the city. Other connections include Route 99 towards Castelldefels via Viladecans and Gavà.
Aerobús is usually the most convenient choice for travelling directly to Plaça Catalunya, while Route 46 can be a good alternative for destinations around Plaça Espanya.
Companies operating at the airport include Avis, Enterprise, Europcar, Hertz-Thrifty, Sixt, Goldcar and Record Go, among others. Vehicles are collected from designated parking areas assigned to each operator, so passengers should check the location specified in their booking.
The airport connects to Barcelona’s metropolitan road network via the C-31 and its associated routes, providing access to Barcelona, Sitges, Castelldefels and other destinations throughout Catalonia.
Renting a car is particularly useful for exploring the coast, visiting towns outside Barcelona or travelling around Catalonia. For stays focused exclusively on Barcelona itself, public transport is generally more practical.
Transfers between terminals
T1 and T2 are located in separate parts of the airport and are connected by a free shuttle bus operating 24 hours a day. Buses run every 5–10 minutes, depending on the time of day, and the journey takes approximately 10–15 minutes. Within T2, sections A, B and C are connected by pedestrian walkways.
Passengers transferring between flights in different terminals should allow additional time for security and passport checks and, where necessary, baggage collection and check-in.
Barcelona-El Prat assigns flights to terminals according to the airline rather than the destination, so both domestic and international flights may depart from T1 or T2. The airport also operates a silent airport policy, with limited general boarding announcements over the public address system. Passengers should check flight information screens regularly for gate assignments and changes.

Hotels near the airport
