The Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport (IATA code: MAD, ICAO code: LEMD) is the main airport in Spain and one of the major air transport hubs connecting Europe and Latin America. It is located in the Barajas district of Madrid, approximately 12 kilometres northeast of the city centre. The airport is organised into two separate terminal complexes: T1, T2 and T3, located in the same area, and T4 with its satellite building T4S, in a different part of the airport.

Transport and getting around
The airport is accessible via the M-40, M-11 and A-2 motorways and offers taxis, buses, metro, Cercanías commuter trains and car rental services. The best transport option depends on your destination and terminal: the metro serves both the T1–T3 complex and T4, while commuter trains stop only at T4. Buses and taxis provide additional connections to central Madrid and other destinations in the region.
Journeys between the airport and destinations inside the M-30 ring road, including much of central Madrid, have a fixed fare of €33. Other destinations are charged according to the applicable taxi fares. Taxis are particularly convenient for passengers travelling with several suitcases, in groups or during the early morning hours.
- Line 203 Airport Express (N27 at night): connects T1, T2 and T4 with central Madrid 24 hours a day. During the day, it serves Atocha, while at night its central terminus is Cibeles. It is a convenient direct option for reaching the city centre, particularly when the metro is not operating.
- Line 200: connects the airport with the Avenida de América transport interchange, where passengers can transfer to metro lines and buses serving other parts of Madrid.
- Line 101: connects the airport with Canillejas and the Barajas neighbourhood, making it useful for shorter journeys in the surrounding area.
- Line N32 (night service): connects T1, T2, T3 and T4 with Avenida de América during the night. It provides an alternative to the Airport Express for passengers travelling to that area, at the regular city bus fare.
Regional buses also serve destinations such as Alcobendas, Torrejón de Ardoz and Alcalá de Henares. T4 has a long-distance bus station located next to module F of the P4 car park.
There are two airport stations: Aeropuerto T1-T2-T3, located in T2, and Aeropuerto T4, on level -1 of Terminal 4. Passengers travelling to T4S must continue from T4 using the automated underground train, as the metro does not serve the satellite terminal directly.
Services operate approximately between 6:00 am and 2:00 am. Certain tickets require an additional €3 airport supplement on top of the regular fare. The metro is a convenient option for reaching Nuevos Ministerios and other destinations connected to the network, although transfers may be necessary.
It is particularly useful for passengers continuing their journey by train from Chamartín or Atocha. Commuter trains serve T4 only; passengers using T1, T2 or T3 must take the free inter-terminal shuttle bus to reach the station. To reach T4S, passengers must continue from T4 using the free automated underground train.
Companies operating at the airport include Avis, Hertz, Europcar, Sixt and Enterprise. Renting a car is particularly useful for exploring the Community of Madrid or travelling to other regions, while public transport is generally more practical for visitors staying exclusively in central Madrid.
Getting between terminals
Madrid-Barajas provides free transport services between its terminals. T1, T2 and T3 form a connected complex with pedestrian routes, while T4 and its satellite building T4S are located in a separate area of the airport.
- Between T1, T2 and T3: passengers can walk between the terminals by following the interior signs.
- Between T1–T3 and T4: a free shuttle bus operates 24 hours a day, approximately every 5 minutes during the day and every 20 minutes at night.
- Between T4 and T4S: a free automated underground train (APM) runs continuously, with a journey time of approximately five minutes.
Passengers with connecting flights should check their assigned terminals and allow enough time for transfers, security or passport controls, and any need to collect and recheck baggage. Special transfer services are also available for certain connections between T1 and T4S.
Terminal T4 and its satellite building T4S form a separate complex from the T1–T3 terminal area. The satellite contains boarding gates connected to T4 by an automated underground train, making it particularly important to check the assigned terminal and boarding gate, especially for connecting flights.

Hotels near the airport
Numerous hotels are located near Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport, particularly in the Barajas district and other areas of northeastern Madrid. Some offer shuttle services to the terminals, while others can be reached by taxi, bus or metro. For early departures, late-night arrivals or long layovers, it is worth choosing accommodation based on the departure terminal and available transport, as proximity to the airport does not always mean the terminal is within walking distance.
