📦 Distinctive feature

Washington Dulles is known for its iconic main terminal, designed by architect Eero Saarinen and opened in 1962. The airport combines the automated AeroTrain system with its historic mobile lounges, large passenger vehicles used to transport travelers between different parts of the airport.

Ground transportation

Washington Dulles International Airport is located west of Washington, D.C., with road access via the Dulles Airport Access Highway and major highways throughout Northern Virginia. Transportation options include taxis, ride-hailing services, Metrorail, regional and intercity buses, private transfers and rental cars.

Washington Flyer Taxi provides the airport’s official taxi service. Taxi stands are located on the lower ground transportation level, accessible from Baggage Claim by following the Taxi or Ground Transportation signs.

Uber and Lyft also operate at Dulles. Pickup is located along the third curb on the lower level, accessible through Doors 2, 4 and 6. Meeting points are designated as Zones 3A through 3H, and the app provides the appropriate pickup location.

The airport has its own Metrorail station on the Washington Metro Silver Line. The station is connected to the main terminal by a covered pedestrian tunnel with moving walkways, which also provides access to Parking Garage 1.

The Silver Line connects the airport directly with Downtown Washington, D.C., and other parts of the metropolitan area, including Reston, Tysons and Arlington, with transfers available to other Metrorail lines.

Passengers can use a SmarTrip card or pay directly with compatible contactless bank cards and mobile devices. Routes, fares and schedules are available on the official Washington Metro website.

Regional and intercity bus services connect the airport with destinations throughout Virginia and the Washington metropolitan area.

Fairfax Connector operates Route 952, connecting Dulles with Reston and Metrorail stations, and Route 983, providing access to the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum’s Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center.

Intercity services such as Virginia Breeze also provide connections to destinations across Virginia and Washington, D.C.

Bus stops are located at Garage 1, Stop 2, near the Metrorail station. From the terminal, passengers should follow the signs for Garage 1, Metro and Public Buses.

Washington Dulles International Airport is served by rental car companies including Alamo, Avis, Budget, Enterprise, Hertz and National, among others.

Rental car offices and vehicle pickup areas are located away from the main terminal and are connected by complimentary shuttles operated by the rental car companies.

Passengers should follow the Rental Cars signs from Baggage Claim to the designated ground transportation stops, where complimentary shuttles provide transportation to the rental car facilities.

🚝 Connections between concourses

The automated AeroTrain system connects the main terminal with Concourses A, B and C using underground trains. Passengers can reach the stations by following the airport’s interior directional signs.

For certain connections, particularly to Concourse D and some international arrivals, the airport uses its historic mobile lounges and Plane Mate vehicles. These services complement AeroTrain and transport passengers between different parts of the airport complex.
