📦 Distinctive features

Opened in 1969 and renamed in honor of former U.S. President George H. W. Bush in 1997, the airport is a major hub for United Airlines. Its five passenger terminals are connected by two internal transportation systems: the elevated Skyway train and the underground Subway train.

Ground transportation

The airport is located north of Downtown Houston, with road access via John F. Kennedy Boulevard and Will Clayton Parkway, which connect to the metropolitan area’s major highways. Ground transportation options include taxis, ride-hailing services, METRO buses, hotel shuttles, private transfers and rental cars.

Licensed taxis are available at designated ground transportation areas outside Terminals A, C and E, near the arrivals areas. Airport staff help organize taxi pickups and assist passengers.

Uber and Lyft also operate at IAH, with designated Ride App Pickup locations at Terminals A, C and E. Passengers arriving at Terminal B can use the Skyway train to reach the pickup areas at Terminal A or C. The ride-hailing app and airport signage provide directions to the appropriate meeting point.

METRO, Houston’s public transportation authority, operates two bus routes connecting the airport with Downtown Houston.

Route 500 IAH Downtown Direct provides a direct connection to central Houston, serving several Downtown locations, including the area around the George R. Brown Convention Center. At the airport, buses depart from Terminal E, Level 2.

Route 102 Bush IAH provides a local service to Downtown Transit Center, with intermediate stops including the Greenspoint area. At IAH, the bus stop is located on the arrivals level of Terminal C.

Current routes, fares and schedules are available on the official METRO Houston website.

Shuttle services connect the airport with nearby hotels, off-airport parking facilities and other destinations throughout the Houston area.

Complimentary hotel shuttles use designated ground transportation pickup areas at Terminals A, C and E. Passengers can check pickup locations and contact their hotel using airport information facilities and designated courtesy phones where available.

Scheduled shuttle services, shared transfers and private transportation are also available to destinations such as Galveston, College Station and Beaumont. Pickup arrangements and booking requirements vary by operator.

George Bush Intercontinental Airport has a dedicated Rental Car Center accommodating several major rental car companies, including Alamo, Avis, Budget, Enterprise, Hertz and National.

The facility is located away from the passenger terminals and is connected to them by complimentary buses marked Rental Car Shuttle. Passengers can board these shuttles at designated ground transportation areas serving Terminals A, C and E.

Rental vehicles are returned directly to the Rental Car Center by following Rental Car Return signs from John F. Kennedy Boulevard or Will Clayton Parkway.

🚝 Getting between terminals

Two complimentary train systems provide transportation between the airport’s terminals. Skyway is an elevated train connecting all five terminals beyond the security checkpoints, allowing passengers to move between concourses without leaving the secure area.

Subway is an underground train operating outside the secure area, connecting the terminals before security and providing access to the Houston Airport Marriott, located within the airport complex. Both systems have clearly marked stations and are wheelchair accessible.

Skyway operates around the clock, while Subway service is suspended during part of the overnight period.
