Check real-time flight status at Harrisburg Airport (MDT). Review schedules and possible delays before heading to the terminal or arranging your transportation.
Harrisburg International Airport occupies part of the former Olmsted Air Force Base, a military installation with an aviation history dating back to the early 20th century. Following the base’s closure, commercial airport operations began in 1969. Today, its relatively compact passenger terminal is connected by an enclosed, climate-controlled skybridge to a parking garage that also houses the airport’s main ground transportation facilities.
Ground transportation
The airport is located beside the Susquehanna River, between Middletown and Highspire, with road access via Airport Connector and connections to Interstate 283, Interstate 83 and the Pennsylvania Turnpike. Transportation options include taxis, ride-hailing services, local and intercity buses, hotel shuttles, private transfers and rental cars.
Uber, Lyft and GoVysh also serve Harrisburg International Airport. Unlike taxis, these services use the designated passenger pickup area on Level 3 of the parking garage.
Passengers should follow ground transportation signs and check their app for the assigned meeting point. Ride-hailing vehicles are not permitted to pick up passengers directly in front of the terminal.
Taxis and chauffeured vehicles provide transportation to Harrisburg, Hershey, Middletown, Lancaster and other destinations throughout South Central Pennsylvania.
rabbittransit Route 7 connects the airport with Middletown, Penn State Harrisburg and Downtown Harrisburg. The route also serves Middletown’s Amtrak station, allowing passengers to connect with rail services without taking a taxi.
The airport bus stop is located at the Ground Transportation Center on Level 1 of the main parking garage. Route 7 operates Monday through Saturday, with schedules and frequencies varying by day.
Current routes and schedules are available on the official rabbittransit website.
Intercity bus services operated by Fullington also provide connections to communities in central and northern Pennsylvania, including Williamsport, Lewisburg, Sunbury and Selinsgrove. Routes and travel arrangements vary by service and can be checked through Fullington.
The airport does not have a railway station inside its terminal, but Middletown’s Amtrak station is approximately 1.6 km away. Harrisburg’s Amtrak station is also accessible by ground transportation.
Both stations are served by the Keystone rail corridor, providing connections to Lancaster, Philadelphia and other Pennsylvania destinations, as well as services to New York City.
Train schedules, routes and tickets are available from Amtrak.
These services use designated areas of the Ground Transportation Center, which is connected to the passenger terminal by an enclosed walkway.
Some hotels in Middletown, Harrisburg and Hershey provide shuttle transportation for their guests. Availability, pickup locations and reservation requirements depend on the property.
Private coaches and group transportation can also be arranged for conventions, organized travel and journeys to other destinations in Central Pennsylvania.
Passengers should confirm pickup arrangements directly with their hotel or transportation provider before traveling.
Companies operating at this facility include Alamo, Avis, Budget, Enterprise, Hertz and National. Rental counters are located in the same complex where vehicles are picked up and returned.
The passenger terminal is connected to the parking garage by an enclosed, climate-controlled skybridge, allowing travelers to walk to the rental car facilities without using an external shuttle.
Other companies, including Payless, operate from off-airport locations. Pickup arrangements and transportation to these facilities should be confirmed directly with the rental company.
Information about rental car companies and their locations is available on the official Harrisburg International Airport ground transportation page.
Getting around the airport
Harrisburg International Airport has a single commercial passenger terminal, so there is no need for automated trains or shuttle buses to travel between separate terminals.
Check-in facilities, security screening and boarding areas are housed within the same building. After passing through security, passengers can walk to the A, B and C gate areas.
The main parking garage and Ground Transportation Center are connected to the terminal by a climate-controlled skybridge, providing pedestrian access to rental cars, taxis and other ground transportation services.
