Ground transportation

The airport is connected to downtown San Francisco and other Bay Area communities by BART, public buses, taxis and rideshare services. Road access is primarily via U.S. Highway 101, while the complimentary AirTrain system provides transportation between terminals and other airport facilities.

Licensed taxis are available at designated center islands outside the arrivals and baggage claim levels of the terminals.

Passengers should follow the Taxis signs to the appropriate pickup areas.

Rideshare services such as Uber and Lyft use separate pickup locations:

• Domestic Terminals 1, 2 and 3: primarily on level 5 of the Domestic Garage.

• International Terminal: at designated center islands on the departures and check-in level.

Some premium rideshare services and accessible vehicles use different pickup locations. Passengers should check the pickup instructions in their app before leaving the terminal.

The San Francisco International Airport BART station is located inside the International Terminal, near the main departures hall.

BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) provides rail connections to downtown San Francisco and other Bay Area destinations, including communities in the East Bay.

Passengers arriving at the domestic terminals can take the complimentary AirTrain to the BART station without leaving the airport complex.

Connections to Caltrain, which serves communities along the San Francisco Peninsula and San Jose, are available by transferring at Millbrae station.

Routes, schedules and fares can be found on the official BART website and Caltrain website.

Public bus services operated by SamTrans connect the airport with San Francisco, Daly City, San Mateo and other communities along the Peninsula.

Route 292 serves the passenger terminals directly. Other SamTrans routes, including EPX and 142, use stops near the Rental Car Center, which can be reached using the AirTrain Blue Line.

Main terminal bus stops are located at:

• Terminal 2: arrivals and baggage claim level, at the center island near Courtyard 2.

• Terminal 3: arrivals level, at the curb near Courtyard 4.

• International Terminal: lower level, near Courtyards A and G.

Regional bus and airport shuttle services, often called Airporters, also connect SFO with destinations such as Marin County and other communities north and south of the Bay.

Route maps, stop locations and schedules are available on the official SamTrans website.

Rental car companies operate from the Rental Car Center, a separate facility away from the passenger terminals.

Passengers can reach the facility using the complimentary AirTrain Blue Line, which connects the terminals with the Rental Car Center. AirTrain stations are clearly signposted throughout the airport.

Rental company counters and vehicle pickup and return areas are located inside the Rental Car Center.

🚆 Getting between terminals: AirTrain

The airport operates a complimentary automated train system called AirTrain, connecting its terminals, parking facilities and other locations throughout the airport.

The system has two lines:

• Red Line: connects all four terminals, terminal parking garages, the BART station and the Grand Hyatt at SFO hotel.

• Blue Line: serves the same main airport facilities, with additional connections to the Rental Car Center and Long-Term Parking.

AirTrain uses automated trains and provides accessible stations equipped with elevators.

Walking connections are also available between terminals. Some post-security areas are connected by pedestrian corridors, allowing passengers to move between certain boarding areas without passing through security again. Available routes depend on the concourses involved and current airport operations.

📦 Distinctive feature

One of SFO’s defining features is the integration of BART and AirTrain within the airport complex. BART provides direct rail access to San Francisco and other Bay Area cities, while AirTrain connects terminals, parking facilities, the Rental Car Center and the Grand Hyatt hotel free of charge, without requiring shuttle buses for these journeys.
