Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (IATA code: PHX, ICAO code: KPHX) is a public-use airport located in Phoenix, Maricopa County, Arizona, approximately 3 miles (5 km) east of downtown, in the United States. It is the main airport serving the Phoenix metropolitan area and a major operating base for American Airlines and Southwest Airlines in the southwestern United States.
Check real-time flight status at Phoenix - Sky Harbor Airport (PHX). Review schedules and possible delays before heading to the terminal or arranging your transportation.
Phoenix Sky Harbor features the PHX Sky Train, a free automated rail system connecting Terminals 3 and 4 with economy parking facilities, the Rental Car Center and the Valley Metro Rail station at 44th Street/Washington. Operating 24 hours a day, it provides convenient transportation throughout much of the airport complex without the need for a car.
Ground transportation
The airport is located approximately 3 miles (5 km) from downtown Phoenix, with access via major urban highways and public transportation. Options include taxis, Uber and Lyft, light rail, public buses, private transfers and rental cars.
Licensed taxis are available at designated stands outside both terminals:
Terminal 3: north curb, near Door 7.
Terminal 4: Level 1, north curb near Door 7 and south curb near Door 4.
Fares are metered, although a flat fare applies to certain trips to Downtown Phoenix within the designated downtown zone. Wheelchair-accessible taxis are also available upon request.
Rideshare services, including Uber, Lyft and Waymo, operate from designated pickup areas:
Terminal 3: south outer curb and a designated section at the east end of the north outer curb.
Terminal 4: Level 1, with marked pickup locations along the north and south outer curbs.
Additional app-based pickup locations are available at the 24th Street and 44th Street PHX Sky Train stations, offering an alternative to the busier terminal roadways.
Pickup locations vary by operator. Passengers should request their ride after collecting their luggage and confirm the assigned meeting point in the app.
Limousine services, private transfers and shuttles to hotels and other Arizona destinations are also available.
Phoenix Sky Harbor connects to the regional public transportation network through the PHX Sky Train, which links the terminals with the 44th Street/Washington station. From there, passengers can board Valley Metro Rail services connecting Phoenix with Tempe and Mesa.
The PHX Sky Train is free and operates 24 hours a day. Between approximately 5:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m., trains generally run every 3.5–7 minutes. Overnight waits may exceed 15 minutes due to maintenance operations.
Passengers can also connect with Valley Metro bus routes:
Route 13: stops at the 24th Street PHX Sky Train station, on the northwest side near Passenger Pick-Up Area 9.
Route 44: connects with the 44th Street PHX Sky Train station.
To use these services from either terminal, take the PHX Sky Train to the appropriate station and follow the signs for public transportation.
Car rental services are centralized at the PHX Rental Car Center, a separate facility housing rental company counters and vehicle pickup and return areas.
Address: 1805 E. Sky Harbor Circle South, Phoenix, AZ 85034.
Access: free PHX Sky Train service from Terminals 3 and 4.
Train hours: 24 hours a day, with reduced frequency possible overnight.
Passengers should follow signs for the PHX Sky Train and get off at the Rental Car Center station. Rental counters and vehicle areas are accessible from the station.
Each rental company sets its own operating hours and reservation conditions. Booking in advance is recommended, especially during busy travel periods.
Phoenix Sky Harbor has two passenger terminals, Terminal 3 and Terminal 4, located in separate buildings.
The main transportation link between them is the PHX Sky Train, which also serves East Economy Parking, 24th Street Economy Parking, the Rental Car Center and the Valley Metro Rail station at 44th Street/Washington.
The service is free and operates 24 hours a day. Trains generally run frequently during the day, although overnight waiting times may increase due to maintenance.
Passengers transferring between terminals should follow the PHX Sky Train signs. Since the terminals do not share a continuous secure departure area, travelers making connections between them must go through security again.
