📦 Distinctive feature

The airport has operated from its current Cascade Township site since 1963 and adopted the name Gerald R. Ford International Airport in December 1999, honoring the 38th President of the United States, who had close ties to Grand Rapids and West Michigan.

Transportation and ground access

Gerald R. Ford International Airport is located southeast of Grand Rapids and is accessible by road through the West Michigan highway network. Main ground transportation options include taxis, app-based ride services, public buses, shuttles, private vehicles and rental cars.

Taxis operate from a designated area in front of the terminal.

Passengers should exit through Door 5 or Door 7 and proceed to the heated Parking Shuttle Shelter on the boulevard, where a taxi coordinator manages pickups.

Uber and Lyft also operate at the airport. The designated rideshare pickup area is located across from Door 4 at the Rideshare Shelter on the boulevard.

The Rapid provides public transportation to the airport on Route 27.

The bus stop is located at the heated shelter on the boulevard across from Door 6.

Route 27 currently serves the airport Monday through Friday.

Rental car companies operate from the airport’s Consolidated Rental Car Facility, which opened in July 2026.

The facility brings rental car operations together in a single building and is connected to the terminal by a climate-controlled pedestrian bridge.

Rental counters are located on different levels of the building, and the facility has its own roadway access to help reduce rental car traffic in front of the terminal.
